Yesterday I attended part of the funeral for Bishop Whitaker of the Fallon 3rd ward (I say part because I was so sick I had to leave and go home). What I did see was beautiful. I really love LDS funerals. They are full of so much hope and peace for the loved ones left behind. It was my first funeral since Halycon's and brought my total of funeral attendance to three. Bishop's eulogy was given by his 5 sons (the youngest is 15, like my brother Ty) and impossible not to cry through.
The past year has been very hard for the Whitaker family and the 3rd ward. Last December, Bishop was hit by a tree limb during a service project. At first it was said he wouldn't survive and then that he wouldn't walk. Bishop attended me and Mike's wedding with help from a walker and by November, the was walking with a cane. But he got strep and while in the hospital for it, it was discovered that he had cancer. On December 16, they said he had only 2 days to live...but he made it until the 21st because he wanted to be at home with his family when he passed.
Bishop was only my bishop for 5 months. But he was the Bishop who was there for the Bice's when Haly passed and the one who helped Mike come back to the church. Mike had said in the past week that he was the man who helped Mike get where he wanted to be. See, all Mike has wanted since he was, like, 20, was to get married and have a family. But none of that was able to happen until Mike came back to the church because, only a month after he went through the temple, he found me. So, you could say that it was part Haly, part Jeff and part Bishop Whitaker that helped Mike and I come together.
So this is my thanks to Bishop Whitaker. Sometimes I thought he was a bit grouchy but given everything he was going through while I knew him, it's understandable. He helped make a world of difference in my husband's life and I know without a doubt that he and Sister Whitaker will be together again along with their kids and grandkids. It's horrible moments like this, when a family loses a father so young, that the gospel helps make bearable.
